Dr. Deb presents to Nordstrom about Weight Bias

K&V Founder Deb Christel had the incredible opportunity of presenting the topic of, “Weight Bias” to members of Nordstrom’s management team last week! It was a fulfilling experience for Deb to share the message of inclusivity and representation in the fashion industry to people in positions of influence at one of America’s largest department store chains.

The presentation included nailing down exactly what defines weight bias, specifically referring to, “Negative attitudes toward a person because they are fat, such as the belief that fat people are gross, lazy, unhealthy or lacking in willpower.”

The session also covered Internalized Weight Bias, which refers to self-directed shaming about oneself due to weight concerns. Internalized weight bias contributes negatively to one’s mental health and wellbeing.

Where does weight bias occur? Simply put, everywhere. From television and film to educational and employment situations, weight bias plagues our society everyday, whether or not we even realize it’s happening around us.

Christel says the opportunity to present in front of Nordstrom employees is a step in the right direction for fat positivity and inclusiveness.

“It’s an honor to be able to share what I know with companies that strive to be fat positive,” Christel said.  “Helping others see how their thoughts and beliefs about plus-size and fat bodies affects their business decisions is the first step toward making the shopping experience better for larger folks.”
