Why Do Clothes Matter?

Why do we care so much about the clothing we wear?

1. Our clothing communicates who we feel we are.
2. If the clothes don’t match what we feel inside then we aren’t being authentic.
3. If you try to be someone you’re not, people will catch on, and we can feel that – people are distracted and spend all their time thinking about how something feels phony or how something is off, instead of thinking about who you are.

Why does this matter?

1. We’re not born with the innate instinct to know exactly what clothing matches with us – because we don’t dress ourselves until we’re older and even then styles change and the meaning behind styles change.
2. So, you have to experiment and try different styles.
3. it’s OK to experiment with clothing styles to find what feels good and authentic to you. It’s a trial and error process and it’s ok if you try something and it doesn’t feel right. Keep mixing and matching until you find it. I love a good cardigan - yeah it’s a little dorky but I really like them.

I’ve tried: goth, band t-shirts, preppy, slutty, PNW style, glam and fab but I feel most comfortable in a sweater.

 

For me, it’s easy to experiment with different styles but for larger  women this can be challenging because the options are limited. Being thin means I have a larger choice of fashions at less expensive prices and that’s not fair because women of all sizes should have access to clothing they need to find what feels good.

1. And you’ll have different styles throughout your life and that’s OK too.
2. The most important thing is that you feel authentic and comfortable. When you can do that, people will see you and not your clothes - and in a very weird way, that is why clothes are important.
